Common golf mistakes in the golf course

Despite all the nuances with golf instruction and the numerous types of golf swings out there, the majority of golfers suffer from the same common golf mistakes such as improper grip, golf shot alignment and weight transfer. Below are a few golf tips to address these common golf mistakes.

Common Golf Mistake 1: Improper Grip

A common golf mistake for most golfers is to have either a too strong or too weak of a grip. Here are a few golf tips to set up the proper neutral golf grip recommended for the majority of golf shots (for right-handers):

a.) Take little finger of right hand and place it between index and middle finger of left hand (leading hand).
b.) Left hand thumb should fit in lifeline of right hand.
c.) When looking down at grip, knuckles of the left hand forefinger and middle finger are visible.
d.) Check that the creases of thumbs and forefingers point between right side of face and right shoulder.

Common Golf Mistake 2: Improper Golf Shot Alignment

A second common golf mistake is to not align properly to your target line when setting up for the golf shot. You can have a great golf swing, but if you line up incorrectly, you will have trouble reaching your target. So, here are a few golf tips to line up properly for your shot, whether on the range or on the course.

For majority of golf shots, the alignment procedure should be the same. Aim your club face along the “target line” and position your body parallel to the target line along the “body line.” To help visualize, think of standing along a railway line where the further rail is the target line to the target and the rail you are standing on is the body line.

It is useful to pick an intermediate target 1 to 2 feet in front of ball and first aim your club face to the intermediate target, then set up properly with your body.

Also, when practicing, create an “alignment station” using 2 parallel clubs and place the ball in the middle of the clubs. Use the two clubs as alignment aids for your target and body line.

Common Golf Mistake 3: Improper Weight Transfer

The third common golf mistake is to shift weight to left leg in backswing which naturally triggers weight shift to right leg in downswing. This weight transfer fault is called a “reverse pivot” and often results in poor golf shots. Conversely, proper weight transfer results in 80% of weight on inside of right foot at top of backswing and full weight shift to left leg at finish position.

To ingrain the proper weight transfer make sure that in the backswing, your body weight is kept on inside of right foot and the right knee remains in place. This sets up correct weight shift to left in downswing.

Know how you can fix the golf slice

A common golf swing fault is to “slice” the golf ball. For right handed golfers, a golf slice occurs when the golf ball starts left of the target once struck, but finishes well right of the target. The golf slice is one of the worse swing faults encountered on the course because it often results in a very poor position to hit the next shot and because there are many causes to the golf slice. Common causes of the golf slice include an open clubface at impact, too “weak” of a golf grip, poor body weight transfer and/or an out-to-in or “over the top” swing.

To fix the golf slice, the golfer should first ensure that he or she is properly aligned toward the target with hips, shoulders and feet all square to the target line. Second, the golfer should ensure that the swing path taken is more in-to-out or in-to-square-to –in rather than out-in. Third, the golfer should ensure a neutral golf grip position and a square clubface at impact.

Practice Drills to Fix the Golf Slice


To fix the golf slice, top PGA teaching professionals recommend practice drills that help incorporate the proper golf swing mechanics into the golf swing and ingrain the correct “feeling” of a well-executed golf shot. Here are several of the most popular practice drills to fix the golf slice.

SLICE TEE DRILL

Corrects slices caused by OUT-IN swings and encourages proper IN-SQUARE-IN swing path.

• Place two tees and ball right to left diagonally, creating an IN-SQUARE-IN swing path. Allow about 4"x 4" spacing from each tee to ball.
• Assume normal setup and ball position with 7-iron.

Basic Golf Tips for Solid Driver Shots

Many golfers are intimidated by driver shots and in an effort to “drive for show” lose focus of driver shot fundamentals forgetting to simply let the driver do the work for them. Remember, it is much, much better to hit a straight 200 yard drive into the fairway than a 300 slice into the woods.

With that said, here are a few basic golf tips to setup properly for driver shots which will result in both more accuracy and longer distance.

Ball position golf basics – Though you should hit downward on the ball to hit crisp iron shots, the driver shot should ascend with a goal to make contact with the ball as the driver club head moves upward. To promote this ascending golf swing, the ball must be placed forward in the stance. A good driver basic golf tip is that the ball is aligned with the heel of the left foot (approximately three balls left of center for right handers).

Posture and stance golf basics – Take a slightly wider than shoulder-width stance and tilt from hips until spine/back angle is approximately 30 degrees from straight position.

Backswing golf basics – When making backswing, large muscles of torso should wind up like a spring as you turn against right knee. ”Lock” right knee in place at same angle as address.

Downswing golf basics – To start downswing, shift weight to left, triggering chain reaction of hips, chest, arms and club all pulling behind the ball. At impact, try to keep the head behind the ball as this helps maintain your swing plane and promotes ascending swing arc through ball contact. It is especially important to keep your left arm straight from impact through release and avoid the dreaded left elbow breakdown (or “chicken wing”) which causes a host of errant shots.

A great practice drill for driver shots is the “whoosh” drill which can be practiced on the range or between shots on the course. Here are basic golf tips to execute the whoosh drill:

1. Flip driver upside down and grip shaft just above club head.
2. Make normal swing with driver and listen for “whoosh” sound from shaft on the downswing.
3. The whoosh sound should be heard after “impact” resulting from proper extension and acceleration through ball.
4. Practice the drill until whoosh sound is heard after point of impact. Carry over this sensation to full swing for more distance with driver shots.

Golf swing fundamental to improve your golf swing

One way to ingrain an effective, consistent and repeatable golf swing is to follow a quick checklist of the golf swing fundamentals and quickly go through the checklist as you practice and prepare for your round. The key is to keep it simple.

Here is a straightforward sample checklist of golf swing fundamentals (for a right handed golfer). The more you repeat this checklist and ingrain it into your golf practice routine, the quicker you will achieve a solid golf swing!

1. Ball position - forward (driver, low irons) or back (wedges, high irons) in stance depending on club used
2. Grip – neutral position with knuckles of left hand forefinger and middle finger visible. Creases of thumb and forefinger for each hand point between right side of face and right shoulder.
3. Posture – correct stance width, proper spine tilt, flexed knees, relaxed arms and chin up and off chest
4. Alignment – body parallel to target line
5. Backswing Takeaway – club parallel to target line when hands reach hip level
6. Backswing Halfway point – butt of grip faces target line, wrists fully hinged
7. Top of Backswing – Left arm straight and club shaft parallel to target line.
8. Downswing Transition – Right elbow in “slot” (near right hip) and butt of grip points to ball
9. Impact – Left wrist flat and weight on left leg.
10. Release – Arms extended down target line and club points to target
11. Finish – Weight fully transferred to left leg and belt buckle faces target.
12. Golf Swing Ball Flight – Evaluate the results of your golf swing. Did shot go straight, hook, pull or slice?

If you are not satisfied with your ball flight, go through the checkpoints above without hitting the golf ball. Then, perform half speed swings with focus on the golf swing checkpoints to ensure your golf swing technique is sound. Finally, resume hitting golf balls at half-speed, then full speed.

It is easy to over-complicate the golf swing. Don’t. Just keep ingraining the golf swing checkpoints and mechanics above and soon your golf swing will dramatically improve and feel completely natural.

Know How to Fix Weak Golf Grip to Hit a Ball

A weak golf grip occurs when the hands are rotated toward the left on the golf grip (for a right handed golfer) which results in an “open” clubface at impact. A weak golf grip is actually recommended for certain shots such as a bunker shot or a lob shot which require an open clubface. However, both of these shots typically incorporate a corresponding opening of the golf stance which makes it easier to hit an open clubface shot.

But for the majority of golf shots that require a normal golf stance and alignment parallel to the target line, a weak golf grip can result in several notable golf swing faults including the slice, push and push slice.

How to Fix a Weak Golf Grip

The “neutral” golf grip is recommended for the majority of golf shots and results in a “square” clubface at impact. If you have a weak golf grip and wish to achieve a neutral golf grip for straighter shots, you should rotate your hands on the grip to the right. To ensure you have a proper neutral grip, check your grip against the following grip basics and checkpoints:

Proper Neutral Grip Basics:

Left hand – place grip across base of little finger and just above first joint of index finger. Apply pressure with the last 3 fingers of left hand.

Right hand - place grip across base of fingers. Wrap fingers around underside of grip. Fold lifeline of right hand over left thumb. Apply pressure with the middle 2 fingers of right hand.

Key Checkpoints of Proper Grip:

• Palms facing each other.
• When looking down at grip, knuckles of the left hand forefinger and middle finger are visible.
• Creases of thumbs and forefingers point between right side of face and right shoulder.
• The hands should work together as one unit with neither dominating the other.
• Wrists hinge and unhinge naturally in backswing and downswing.

Once you get in the habit of achieving the proper neutral grip, you will be amazed how much straighter and further your golf shots go!

Last Minute Golf Tips to Hit the Ball in Right Direction

In today’s hectic world, it is getting harder and harder to find the time to hone your golf game whether on the driving range or on the course. It’s difficult enough to find 2 to 5 continuous hours to work in 9 to 18 holes. But what do you do when you only have a few minutes to practice golf or prepare for your round? For the busy golfer, here are a few last minute golf tips that can really help your game in very little time on the range or before your round.

On the Range

First, to get the most out of your limited time when you practice, make sure you spend a few minutes to define your practice agenda, needs and focus areas before you practice. In other words, practice with a purpose!

Second, it is critical to realize that sixty percent or more of your golf score occurs within 100 yards of the hole. Here’s a quick golf tip – to most efficiently lower your golf scores, devote half or more of your limited time practicing the short game (pitching, chipping and putting).

Here is a last minute golf tip 30 minute routine for the range designed for efficient practice.

• 5 Minutes: Pre-swing warm up (stretching and quarter-speed swings)
• 5 Minutes: Hit short chip/pitch shots

    Golf pitching and chipping shot- know how to execute properly

    Over 60% of your golf score can be attributed to the short game and the degree that you can successfully execute the golf pitching shot and golf chipping shot is critical to improving your score. To help you get the most out of your golf short game on or off the course, here are some critical golf pitching and chipping shot tips to become a short game master.

    Golf Pitching Shot: Setup and Execution

    1. The “golf pitching shot” is typically used for distances from ten to seventy yards.

    2. The golf pitching shot spends more time in the air than on the ground. When hitting golf pitching shots, use a lofted club such as a sand wedge (54 to 58 degrees loft) or lob wedge (59 to 62 degrees loft).

    3. Slightly open stance.

    4. Ensure that your ball position is slightly forward from the middle.

    5. Place your weight so that sixty percent of your weight is on your left foot and 40 percent is on your right foot. Keep this weight distribution throughout the golf pitching shot.

    6. Move hands down the grip and in front of the ball. Grip the club slightly firmer in the golf pitching shot than you would for a normal golf shot.

    7. Keep steady pace and swing torso back and through the golf pitching shot.

    8. To control your distance, use the 7-8-9 golf pitching shot method where you swing your straight left arm back to the particular “hours” of a clock to achieve consistent distance control. For example, if you swing your left arm back to the “9-o’clock” position and hit the ball 45 yards, then your 9 o’clock shot is for 45 yard golf pitching shots. Practice this approach until you know your distance for “7 o’clock,” “8 o’clock” and “9 o’clock” shots.

    Golf Chipping Shot: Setup and Execution

    1. The “golf chipping shot” is typically used when your ball is 3 to 6 feet off the putting surface.

    2. The golf chipping shot is used to land the ball onto the green as soon as possible toward the cup.

    3. When setting up for the golf chipping shot, distribute your weight so that 60 percent of your weight is on your left leg throughout the chip shot.

    4. Open your stance.

    5. Position yourself so that your ball position is right of center.

    6. Place your hands down the grip and in front of the ball.

    7. Make a smooth, easy stroke…do not let the left wrist brick in the golf chipping shot.

    8. Maintain the letter “Y” that is formed with your hands, arms and shoulders throughout the golf chipping shot stroke.
